Congress and Afzal Guru

By suddenly deciding tohang Afsal guru to death Congress is heading for big trouble. After the initial welcome statements the dissenting voices are started being heard .The denial of visit for his family before his death and the decision not to handover the body to his family will snowball into a controversy .The separatists in the valley and across the border suddenly have a martyr through whom they can now motivate present and future generations into militancy. How long you can suppress protests by imposing curfew and curtailing the publication of news papers? Kashmir will see turbulence in the days ahead.

The ally of Congress in the valley , the national conference, have already distanced itself from the hanging saying it has nothing to do with it and the who;e thing was decided by the congress only.NC was just informed about it.The accusation that the hanging was a political decision will grow stronger in the coming days .If congress is expecting political gains from this then they will be mistaken.

The people of Kashmir and some Muslims in other part of India will be drawn away from the congress. The cry for hanging the killers of Rajiv Gandhi and Beant Singh sentenced to death long before Afsal guru will grow louder and stronger now.Their punishment is not yet implemented and congress will be under pressure now to do it .Otherwise accusations will grow saying they are partial to some .

Already there is huge demand in TN and Punjab to commute the death sentences of these killers. If centre goes ahead with the hangings it will politically alienate people of Punjab and TN and there will be no electoral gains there. Now the hanging of guru has become a double edged sword for the congress.Congress first described this as a master stroke by the home minister Shinde, after his disastrous  Hindu terror speech, by now it is dawning on them that they are in for more more serious trouble .Shinde will be blamed for it though not publicly but privately by the congress as no one has the guts to question some who is a favourite of the "Family " and subordination to the family is touted as congress "culture ".

We have to watch how the fascinating political drama unfolds.
